To be able to understand Japanese hentai, a person must understand how modern Japanese manga came into being. During the occupation of Japan after the Second World War, the Allied and American occupational forces brought with them comics and cartoon from their homelands. This introduced a new form of comic artwork to the Japanese culture. American G.I.’s were famous for their ‘pin-up’ pictures of Betty Grable and other movie stars, as well as their rather risque (at the time) half nude pin-up girls. This had a tremendous effect on how manga (Japanese for comics) and anime (cartoons) would look like and what their storylines would be like up into the present day.
