Hentai is one of the most popular art forms in Japan. The word means ‘sexually perverse’ when applied to print or animated materials. Japanese mangas (comics) have been heavily influenced by the post World War II occupation of the country by the victorious American forces. These forces brought with them comics and cartoons from the United States that represented a new art form to the Japanese artists, a style that they began to emulate.
There are several types of hentai but one of the most popular are those comics that are done by the Japanese dojinshi, or independent artist, because they often use popular figures from regular anime stories and video games. (more…)

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008Modern Japanese hentai began in the late 1940’s as a result of the American armed forces occupation of Japan at the end of World War II. The American G.I.’s and other occupational forces brought with them and imported comic books and cartoons from the United States. The Japanese artists began to copy and incorporate the artistry of these publications into their own comic style. The Japanese mangas (their word for comics) has never been the same. This artistic style of comics has also influenced the look of hentai mangas. Hentai mangas are comics that have sex and sexual situations as the main theme of the storyline.
The word hentai means ‘sexually perverse or perverted’ when applied to print or film (it is a slang insult meaning ‘pervert’ or weirdo when applied to a person). (more…)
