Until fairly recently, in Japan, mangas and anime that had lesbianism as a theme was frowned upon by the general Japanese public. But with manga series such as ‘Shiroi Heya no Futari (the first popular manga story featuring lesbianism) slowly lesbian themed mangas and anime became more accepted until they are now part of the hentai mainstream. While Ryoko Yamagishi’s gentle love story about to girls in an all girl boarding school was published in 1970, many of the themes used in that story are still part of Japanese yuri (lesbian) hentai of today.
